Members: The fat lady has sang! The current administration said goodby and the list of departing Vice Presidents was a long one. We as a body of delegates spoke volumes in what you our member wanted, CHANGE, and change you have. New directions from a fresh administration that has heard loud and clear, NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL! Of course time will tell, however the good ole boys network was shown the door, I feel that will set the tone for this new President and staff, I you do not do the job, there is the door in four. This has been exciting and informative and I again thank you the members for giving me the chance to represent YOU. Jim Larkin

Subject: Prostate cancer caused by diesel fumes, suit says
Date: 08/16/2007

News

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - A Union Pacific fireman and engineer claims his exposure to diesel exhaust and tobacco smoke caused him to develop prostate cancer, the Madison County Record reports. Seeking in excess of $100,000 in damages, Walter H. Obermann filed a Federal Employers' Liability (FELA) suit in St. Clair County Circuit Courty Aug. 6. Obermann also is seeking compensation under the Locomotive Boiler Inspection Act. He claims that while employed from March 1971 through July 2005 his employer failed to provide him a safe place to work. Among other things, he claims Union Pacific failed to warn him of the hazardous nature of diesel exhaust and environmental tobacco smoke. "(Union Pacific) failed to inspect its locomotives, cars, cabooses, appurtenances, and other equipment and buildings in order to determine their propensity for contamination by diesel exhaust and environmental tobacco smoke," the complaint states. Obermann claims he suffers pain, disability, mental anguish and "extreme nervousness as a result of his fear of the unknown effects of cancer, and the reasonable concern over the prospects of redeveloping prostate or some other type of cancer caused by his exposure...," the complaint states. (This item appeared Aug. 13, 2007, in the Madison County Record.

THE MAJORITY HAS SPOKEN TODAY AUGUST 13TH THE OLD GUARD OF THE UTU WAS GIVEN THE BOOT! President Thompson's and Vice President Marceau's fair haired candidate, David Hakey, was soundly defeated in the first ballot! The delegates sent the International a loud message. Mike Futhey was elected President, Arty Martin Vice President, and Kim Thompson Secretary Treasurer. This signals a radical change within the UTU division of Smart. The watchword is WE; not, I, as Hakey expounded in his campaign speech to the delegates. Will fill you the members in following tomorrows Vice Presidents are elected. Jim Larkin Delegate

Subject:        lakeside sub reroutes off columbia river sub

Bob,

If you can give me a ball park daily count for additional trains on the Lakeside sub and also the # reduction off the Columbia river sub as well as the time period in the following format, I can equate that to the number of turns to adjust the pools for the local chairman:

Lakeside Sub:

Increase EB:   ___3-4__depending on day of the week.

Increase WB:    ___3-4___depending on day of week.

Columbia River Sub:

Decrease EB:  ___3-4___

Decrease WB: ____3-4___

Time Period (start/end…):  _July 29 thru Sept 14th_______

The 10 hour window will be Sun thru Wednesday.  Will run as many trains via Wenatchee as we can Wednesday night thru Saturday noon.

Thanks
